What To Expect

You’re probably wondering what your first pelvic floor physical therapy visit will look like. You may even be a little anxious or scared. But there is truly nothing to be worried about! No speculum or cold tables reside here.

You will walk into our cozy office where we have calming oils diffusing and relaxing music playing. You will be greeted warmly and welcomed to help yourself to tea or water. Feel free to try the different seat cushions if you would like. Your therapist will then welcome you into a treatment room.

Our treatment rooms have a spa vibe and we’ll sit and  discuss what you are coming in for. We will then go through an orthopedic assessment where we will assess your pelvic alignment, hips and back. If your symptoms warrant an internal pelvic exam and you feel ready, we will perform one on the first visit. Like we mentioned, there is no speculum or stirrups.

After the exam, you will get dressed and we will discuss what was found during the evaluation. We will discuss your personalized treatment plan, answer your question and book follow ups if necessary. It truly is a smooth and relaxing visit. Outside of appointments, you will have direct access to your therapist via your patient portal and app. If you don't want to download the app, no problem!

We look forward to seeing you in the office to help you reach and strive beyond your goals!

FAQs

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Everyone has muscles within their pelvis that control bowel, bladder and sexual function. These muscles are constantly active to keep you dry throughout the day and night. Physical therapists who are trained to assess and treat the joints, nerves, muscles and fascia inside the pelvis will assist with strengthening, stretching, improving coordination and reducing pain in this region. Your therapist may recommend a rectal or vaginal exam to assess and or treat these internal structures. This is performed only with your written AND verbal consent. Your PT will also address any issues in the rest of the body that may be contributing to your condition. Pelvic floor physical therapy is performed one on one in a private treatment room. We are a concierge medical practice where you, the patient, are listened to and heard.

Do you see male patients?

Yes! A lot, actually. Males can suffer from pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, bladder and bowel dysfunction just like women can. Many urologists in the area refer their male patients to us, and we can help.

“What I have going on down there is quite embarrassing, are you sure you can help me?” We have seen it all and treated it all. We realize that you're considering getting help with something that is private, sensitive and troubling. That is exactly why we're here. There's no TMI at our office.

Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral for the first 21 days, after that, yes, you will need one to continue with treatment. For females, it is ideal to have had a pelvic exam in the past 2 years.

What if I’m on my period?

There is no contraindication for treatment while menstruating, so please maintain your appointment schedule so we can meet your goals more efficiently. As always, it’s your choice if you prefer to defer but 24 hours cancellation notice is necessary to avoid a fee.

Do you treat other issues like back, neck, shoulder or knee issues like general orthopedic physical therapy?

We do! We're Doctors of Physical Therapy and have ample training and experience with all areas of the body.

Why visit Progressive Pelvis Physical Therapy instead of my primary care, OB/GYN, or an in-network therapist?

Your provider may not be aware of pelvic floor physical therapy or know the extent of the conditions we can help with. Many providers are not trained in pelvic floor therapy and seek prescription or surgical solutions first!

The experience of pelvic floor physical therapists matters. Our therapists have years of experience and a variety of skills that go above and beyond the basic pelvic floor training.

Pelvic problems are not often openly discussed and can be quite complex. In fact, many physicians and health providers still don’t know that physical therapy for the pelvic floor exists or understand how it may be different from traditional physical therapy. Some pelvic floor physical therapists lack experience or mentoring, have abbreviated sessions dictated by insurance companies, and so many patients don’t meet their goals efficiently.

Many people end up finding us on their own online. We would be happy to give you a free phone consult, call our office at 770-765-3303 to schedule.

We look forward to seeing you in the office to help you reach and strive beyond your goals!
